đŸ§Ș Beta: This guide is for boarding and daycare businesses using Financial Reports with Smarter Invoice. Financial Reports are currently in beta. Contact MoeGo Support to request access.

Revenue Categories let you organize supported Financial Reports around how you and your bookkeeper review revenue. For example, you might want separate groups for boarding, daycare, enrichment add-ons, and retail products.

Use this guide to create your categories, assign items, and review the category breakdown in a report.

How Revenue Categories work

Revenue Categories are custom reporting groups. They add a way to organize your figures without replacing your existing services, products, or care types.

Setting

Revenue Category

How you want the item grouped in supported financial reports

For example, you could group a boarding night under Boarding and a one-to-one play session under Enrichment. Choose names that your team and bookkeeper recognize.

📝 Note: Reports use each item’s current Revenue Category assignment, including for past sales. Changing an item’s category can therefore change the category breakdown when you review an earlier period.

Before you start

Decide which breakdown will help you review your business. A short category list is usually easier to maintain than a separate category for every item.

What you want to review

Example categories

Main business lines

Boarding, Daycare, Retail

Optional services

Enrichment, Baths, Other add-ons

Bookkeeping groups

Boarding revenue, Daycare revenue, Retail revenue

You will complete two tasks: create the categories, then assign your items to them.

Create a Revenue Category

  1. Open Accounting: Go to Settings > General settings > Accounting.

  2. Select Revenue category: Open the category list.

  3. Click Add new revenue category.

  4. Enter the Revenue category name: Use the name you want to see in reports.

  5. Add a Description if helpful.

  6. Set a parent category if needed: Select This is a subcategory, then choose the Parent revenue category.

  7. Click Save.

Repeat these steps for the categories your business needs.

Assign items to Revenue Categories

  1. Open Item list: Go to Settings > General settings > Accounting > Item list.

  2. Find an item: Use the search or available item filter.

  3. Click Select in that item's Revenue category column.

  4. Choose the Revenue Category for the item.

  5. Repeat for other items you want to categorize.

Review categories in a report

  1. Open a supported report, such as Sales summary report or Cash basis sales report.

  2. Choose Revenue category in the report's grouping options.

  3. Select your business and date range.

  4. Review the category breakdown. To inspect individual sold items, use Sales detail report.

Available grouping, filter, and column options differ by report.

Q: What does Category not assigned mean?

A: An item has not been assigned to a Revenue Category. Review its assignment in Item list. If you see many uncategorized rows, start with the services and products your business sells most often.

Q: Should my categories match my accounting software?

A: You can choose categories that support your bookkeeper's workflow. Revenue Category setup does not, by itself, sync categories or report data to accounting software.
