How Lodging Capacity Works

Written by Marina

MoeGo calculates lodging occupancy differently depending on how each lodging type is configured. Understanding this helps you read the numbers in the Lodging View accurately β€” and helps you catch potential overbooking before it becomes a problem.

To configure your lodging types and set capacity limits, see Set Up Lodging.

Check or change a lodging type's space type

  1. Go to Settings > Lodgings.

  2. Click Manage lodging type.

  3. Select the lodging type you want to update.

  4. Under Space type, select Room / Kennel or Area.

  5. Click Save.

πŸ“ Note: Changing the space type affects how capacity is counted everywhere in MoeGo β€” including the Lodging View, Online Booking availability, and capacity alerts.

How It Works

Every lodging type is set to one of two space types. The space type controls how occupancy is counted throughout MoeGo β€” in the Lodging View, Online Booking, and any capacity-based alerts.

Space type

How capacity is counted

Room / Kennel

Based on the number of rooms. Each room is either occupied or available β€” regardless of how many pets are inside it.

Area

Based on the number of individual pets. An area stays available until the total pet count reaches the configured maximum.

Room / Kennel occupancy

  • Numerator (X): Number of rooms currently occupied by a pet or pet family

  • Denominator (Y): Total number of rooms in that lodging type

A room is counted as occupied the moment any pet β€” or pet family β€” is assigned to it for a boarding overnight or daycare daytime stay, even if the room allows more than one pet.

Example: A Standard Room lodging type has 10 rooms, each allowing up to 2 pets from the same family. If 6 rooms have pets assigned (regardless of whether each room has 1 pet or 2), occupancy displays as 6 / 10 (60%).

Area occupancy

  • Numerator (X): Total individual pets present in the area on that day β€” boarding overnight and daycare daytime combined

  • Denominator (Y): Maximum number of pets the area can hold

Example: A Play Area is configured with a maximum of 60 pets. If 48 pets are assigned on a given day, occupancy displays as 48 / 60 (80%).

Checkout day exclusion

For both space types, boarding pets that are scheduled to check out on that day are not counted toward occupancy. Their departure day is not counted as an occupied night or slot.

This applies to both the per-type row counts and the overall facility percentage.

Overall facility occupancy

The percentage in each date column header shows the combined occupancy across your entire facility for that day.

It is calculated as:

Overall % = sum of all occupied units or pets Γ· sum of all capacity

Each lodging type contributes its own X and Y to the combined total β€” whether it's a Room/Kennel type (rooms occupied / total rooms) or Area type (pets present / max pets).

What over 100% means

A percentage over 100% means a lodging is overbooked for that date.

This typically happens when a staff member assigns a pet to a full room by turning off the Only show applicable lodging filter in the room selector. MoeGo marks a full unit and stops recommending it β€” but the filter can be toggled off to override this.

If you see an overbooked reading, open the affected lodging type, identify which appointments are stacked on that date, and reassign one to a different room.
